Development of a Cold Chain Insulated Container System for Healthcare distributor.

Cold Chain

Industry:

Pharmaceutical and Health Care.

Objective:

To design and develop a validated container solution that complies with local guidelines (e.g. Medicines control Council of South Africa, MCC) as well as international requirements (e.g. World Health Organization, WHO) in order to ensure the cold chain is maintained for the distribution of thermolabile pharmaceutical products.

Overview:

As a result of high order volumes and the extensive network in which the distributor operates, a bespoke container solution was required that took into account variable order sizes, as well as strict maintenance of internal container temperatures between 2 °C to 8 °C. After an extensive order-specific Optimization Data Analysis exercise, appropriate container payload volumes were determined. When combined with cost-effective insulation and cool pack configuration options, this resulted in the creation of two (2) unique container systems that could maintain the cold chain between 2 °C to 8 °C for the required duration on Low, Moderate and High Risk routes within the supply chain network.

Outcomes:

  • Two (2) cost-effective and unique container solutions optimized for the supply chain.
  • A validated container solution that maintains internal container temperatures between 2 °C – 8 °C.
  • Intelligent and streamlined packaging design to facilitate packing of multiple orders simultaneously.
